One of the most common questions I get as a Washington DC wedding photographer is whether or not my couples should have a second photographer. I get it! Deciding on all of the pieces of a wedding photography package can be stressful. So today, I wanted to talk about why it’s a good idea to consider a second photographer for your wedding and why I include a second photographer in a few of my wedding photography packages!

More Moments Captured

Perhaps the most obvious reason a second photographer is a good idea is that with two cameras going, there will be more of your wedding captured and from different vantage points. When you have a big wedding, this can be a huge help! Even on intimate wedding days, a second perspective is nice. Imagine having multiple images of both the bride walking down the aisle AND of the groom’s and guests’ reactions. There’s so many moments like that on a wedding day that can benefit from additional eyes.

A side note: If you’re planning an intimate elopement with very few guests, a second photographer probably isn’t needed! However, based on your venue, number of guest, specific desires a second photographer is something I discuss with every couple during our consult call. Based on the specific details of your day I will let you know if a second photographer is needed.

A More Relaxed Timeline

A second photographer can also can also help make your timeline a little bit more enjoyable and relaxing through your wedding day. For example, both partners can be getting ready at the same time in different locations and still both be photographed. Or during cocktail hour, the primary photographer will be with the couple for portraits and the second photographer will cover guests at cocktail hour. Imagine being able to relax and truly enjoy your portraits because you know you’ll have plenty of photos of your guests. Another great benefit of hiring a second shooter is if full coverage of your first look. The primary photographer will capture the reaction of you while the second photographer will capture the emotions and reaction of your partner.

Budget Concerns

One of the biggest reasons couples worry about a second photographer is because of their budget. If you’re worried about the cost, it may be worth looking at HOW many hours you need instead of removing a second photographer. Many wedding photographers can help you plan a timeline that keeps the important reception moments earlier in the evening so you can end photography coverage a little earlier instead of a super long day. This could change your price point for some photographers – so it’s worth looking into package options!
